printResearch indicates that in the first 18 months of learning to read, the presentation of decodable reading material will generate the highest gains. This means within the Foundation school year and into Year 1, all students will benefit from two years of full access to decodable reading books. For some students, decodable reading material is also required in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6.
PLD’s Downloadable Decodable Reading Material
PLD’s Phonic Dictation resources contain short, phonic-rich passages in which students are encouraged to read each day and have their oral reading timed. Repeated reading is an evidence-based technique to develop fluency. The tasks will also benefit phonic concept transferring into writing.
Do The PLD Phonic Passages Also Target Editing and Writing?
Our phonic dictation tasks require minimal photocopying and present a phonic-based reading, editing and writing process that is straight forward to communicate to students. A simple weekly routine may look like:
Monday: Read the allocated passage and time the reading (could be set for homework). Task 2: A simple comprehension task, in which students illustrate (and label) as many elements in the passage as is possible.
Tuesday: Read the allocated passage and time the reading (could be set for homework). Task 3: Copying and handwriting practice, by rewriting the passage.
Wednesday: Read the allocated passage and time the reading (could be set for homework). Task 4: Editing practise by identifying and correcting the errors within the passage.
Thursday: Read the allocated passage and time the reading (could be set for homework). Task 5: First attempt at the rewriting of the passage in the context of dictation.
Friday: Read the allocated passage with expression. Task 5: Second attempt at the rewriting of the passage in the context of dictation.
